folks who went to NCSU or UNC-CH, preferably in computer science...
i have a friend who's looking at grad program in comp sci, particularly in graphics. thoughts for or against the grad program at either of these schools? i can't answer for comp sci at NCSU, since i transferred into it shortly before dropping out, and spent the last semester i completed classes taking anything but engineering classes.
for that matter, anyone going to school/have gone through school/whatever have any other thoughts on good grad CS programs out there?
:) well, i promised him ages ago that i'd solicit advice from folks, since i went to somewhere with a decent comp sci program, and like a lot of things, just forgot. =/ so. :)
From what I understand, UNC-CH's grad school comp-sci program had it all over State's, especially in the area of graphics (interesting stuff with VR was going on, last I checked).
Hell, yeah. I've had friends who've gone through the UNC-CH program who worked on the VR stuff that was going on while I was in college (forever long ago). It's vastly superior to NCSU's.
If it's graphics he wants, he wants to go to UNCCH. We have an amazing graphics department here, one of the best in the nation. It's highly math-based, so if he's shy about doing linear algebra, he might want to bone up on that.
However, if he wants to do anything with networking, operating systems, real-time computing, ("hard" computer science), then I would say NCSU. UNCs development in these areas is fairly newbish. I'd give them a couple of years to mature first..
The only thing I can say about Graphics at NCSU is that there's a chance that you'd get a class taught by McCallister. But apparently he's really nice to his grad students, so...
Oh, and apparently UNC-CH was ranked the #1 graduate school for graphics in U.S. News and World Report... kind of hard to beat that.
