Dear braintrust:

Let's say that you are involved in picking a book for freshmen to read the summer before they start university, culminating in a discussion event the weekend before classes start. Let's further say that the school is:

- 2/3 female
- 14% GLBTQ (that's the number that actively self-identifies as such; my guess is that it's more like 20 to 25%)
- 25% African American, and only 60% white, with everyone else being distributed between all other categories, for undergraduates
- and that 75 percent of full-time undergraduates receive some kind of need-based financial aid and the average need-based scholarship or grant award is $6,332
(2005 numbers for the most part, I'm having trouble finding newer on the fly)

It can be fiction or non-fiction; what would you recommend?
