This is how a lot of conversations go lately.

(6:38:01 PM) Joyce: lansing to GSO is 22 hours, 2 transfers, and $141 on greyhound.
(6:38:44 PM) Joyce: $207, 2 transfers, and 8 hours flying. sheesh :)
(6:39:26 PM) Joyce: $143, 2 transfers, and 23 hours on Amtrak.
(6:39:35 PM) Joyce: i know we live in a big country, but this is absurd.
(6:40:10 PM) Joyce: all of those are one way.
(6:40:35 PM) Ginger!: Lansing, she is not convenient.
(6:40:47 PM) Joyce: 11 hours by car. $55 or so in Kaylee. $68 in Mira. :p
(6:40:53 PM) Ginger!: yups.
(6:41:18 PM) Joyce: seriously, when driving across half the eastern seaboard is your best option...

If renting or other access to a car is an option, you might consider either Grand Rapids (GRR) or Saginaw (MBS), depending on where you're going. Flint (FNT) might work for you too, since there's pretty good service on AirTran between FNT and ATL. Flint's a half-hour from Lansing, Saginaw's ~45, Grand Rapids is ~1.5hrs.

This may or may not be helpful, but figured I'd pipe up since it's where I'm from. :)

Mmm, your numbers are skewed :) Flint is about an hour, Saginaw is an hour and a half on a good day, and I'd be shocked if either of them is any cheaper to fly into than Lansing. Personally, when I go back, I've concluded that flying into Chicago and taking the dang train up is the cheapest option.

I've gotten immensely lucky on airfares into Saginaw a couple of times, so I always check. For my flights, Grand Rapids often ends up being the least expensive. But I'm coming from San Francisco, so I think it goes without saying that Your Mileage Will Vary. :)

My numbers are based on my dad's speed-demon driving and a bit of fudge, since they live between Flint and Lansing, and so I'm used to thinking of things in terms of how far things are from my parents' home. (Specifically, Owosso, since you're obviously familiar with the area.) I honestly can't remember the last time that I drove to Lansing from anywhere other than my hometown, so I'm sure that your estimates are more accurate than mine.

:) I grew up in Flint while attending schools in Lansing, then we moved to south Lansing when I was in junior high, and I spent most of my late teens driving from Lansing to Saginaw every weekend to LARP. :)

Yeah, right now I come in from Seattle, but I'm moving back to the Midwest next year, which is why Joyce is doing the mental math :)

Small world!

I always forget that you're from there. :)

I did some checking, and it looks like GR or Flint to RDU may be the answer, when I can't drive home (which, if I ride with Faecat back to MI and we do touristy stuff, I won't have my car). So, yay, thank you! :)

Hee! Grant and I did some math and numbers, and ended up driving down to San Francisco a couple weekends ago to visit family. It was a nice trip (although 14 hours in a car is a little rough; if we'd had more time, two days per way would've been nicer!). :)
