random bits of today: 1. We did not get the Son of Snowpacalypse…

random bits of today:

1. We did not get the Son of Snowpacalypse today, after all. It did snow this morning, big fat wet flakes that melted as soon as they hit the ground. Pretty and ephemeral, as snow should be.

2. The older I get, the creepier Mr. Big's song "To Be With You" gets. When I was a teen, this was like some kind of weird good guy anthem; now it just comes across as creepy and stalkerish and paternalistic. Why did I put this on my driving mix this morning?

3. I've been listening to so much This American Life in the car lately that I've been hearing my days narrated in Ira Glass's voice, and in the cadance that contributors to TAL tend to use. Hence, the switch to music for awhile.

4. On the other hand, I've got a ton of books out of the library that I heard about on TAL, so it's not all bad.

5. I tried to listen to Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island in the car, and I think I've concluded that (A Walk in the Woods excepted), I am just not the target audience for his particular brand of, erm, humor.

6. Things that tick me off? Tailgating me in a school zone.

7. The latest batch of stats homework is bad, very very bad. So bad we're going to roll back a chapter on Monday bad. Sigh.

8. I managed to leave my thumb drive in my office at the university. This is urksome.

9. We are having people over Saturday and the house is nowhere near ready yet. The good thing is, it shouldn't be too bad if we get our rears in gear tomorrow.

10. I'm craving brown rice, peanut sauce, $protein, and collards. Since I'm the only one in the house who will eat such a combination, I think I have lunch for next week lined up.

Ha! I see a lot of my past week in your updates here.

One - we've been streaming a lot of TAL (you can stream podcaster over the TiVo and Netflix has a couple of the episodes, too - we're not in the car that much so we never catch it live) and I start to hear a narration of my day's events. I thought I was the only one that happened to!

Second - per #10, this is my new favorite addiction from the brewpub down the street: the vegan bowl - organic quinoa, black beans, grilled tofu, kale, red peppers, sweet potatoes, raw carrot salad, sesame seeds, green onion + spicy cashew sauce add avocado. You can mix and match things you like / don't like. In the spring they have asparagus instead of sweet potatoes and it's fantastic! I made this at home and for the cashew sauce you can use your nut butter of choice + soy sauce + cayenne or crushed red peppers; add water to thin and nuke it for a minute or so. I think I know what's for lunch today!

You are totally not the only one. I find myself writing stories in my head: "I'm a part-time instructor at a large community college. Parking is atrocious..." :)

And that bowl sounds incredibly good. I've been getting worse at feeding myself decent lunches lately. I should get in the habit of fixing up a couple of whole grains on Sunday, cutting up a bunch of vegetables, making a couple of sauces... and then in the morning, all I would have to do is pull out the tupperware and scoop. Hrms.

TAL is the only thing to keep me sane on Mondays. I get the new podcast for the drive in every Monday morning and try to savor it, parse it out, make it last as long during the week as I can (I have a 15 minute drive to work, so I can almost do it if I'm careful).

I've been listening to that in either regular radio show or podcast format for almost 15 years now. Love. It. So. Much. Have you ever seen the TV show?

Whereas, I spent 50 minutes in the car each day, round trip (at a minimum), so I've been chewing through what I pulled down a couple years ago and not listed to. :)

I haven't seen the TV show, but it's been on "the list", ya know? And ooooh, Netflix has it on instaplay. :)

I'm with you on Bill Bryson, just doesn't do much for me. Did I already recommend the Coverville podcast for a music podcast? Lots of fun :-)
