So, about two and a half years ago, Jeff convinced me that we needed to add to the menagerie. We brought home Lucy, a honey bear hamster. She liked sunflower and pumpkin seeds, chewing on her cage, running in her wheel, rolling gleefully at ankles when she was in her ball, playing tug of war with mineral chews, and Jeff. She was firmly his, bonded like super glue; I couldn't even handle her (which was difficult, when she figured out how to get herself out of her cage while he was in Seattle.) She didn't take any crap from the cats, staring them down more than once; Marty adored her (don't laugh - ever seen a cat subserve herself to a rodent? Marty is zed critter, around here).

Lucy got very very sick in the last couple of days, and yesterday she died. We buried her in the side yard underneath the trees. She might have been Jeff's, and she might have been just a hamster, but she brought joy into our lives, and I'm going to miss her very much.

Dear animal kingdom,

Thank you for not actually injuring yourself on my vehicle tonight, though you sure thought about it. Cats really shouldn't be trying to cross Guilford College Road. Neither should deer. (Though the deer were very, very pretty).

Whee,
Joyce
