Communicating with Mom right now

Communicating with Mom right now is an odd mix of gestures, lip reading, and writing notes. It's frustrating, but we're making it work.

Did I miss something? Last I knew your mother had hearing.

She had some, but not much; in fact, not much enough that she was approved for a Cochlear implant. However, when they put in the hardware for the implant, they kill any hearing you do have until it gets turned on1, which happens anywhere from two to six plus weeks after the surgery, depending on how long it takes you to heal up. Meantime, she doesn't sign because she's always heard, doesn't have a TTY because ditto, etc. It's been a very long few weeks.

1. At least, if you're my mom and you only had hearing in the ear that they put the implant in. I don't know much about the surgery.
