joyce (joyce) wrote,

I love my Fridays. Today was some sleeping late, some Voyager, some DS9, some wine, some homemade pizza, some going down to our favorite local farmer's place to pick up eggs and beef and sausage and talk to them a little bit for the website, some working on my theory test due Monday. A girl can't complain.

I had a funny (odd funny, not ha ha funny) encounter with a classmate last night. She wanted to know why the other girl and I had keys to the graduate office (we were working on our test, and the prof had us spread out into other rooms.) I told her we had assistantships. So then I had to explain what assistantships were to her. So then she asked if we got paid, and I said yea, we get a monthly stipend, and my tuition's paid, too [which made the out-of-state assistant yelp, and if I had thought about it, I wouldn't have said anything, but I'd forgotten that she was out-of-state. It's not my fault they don't have any out-of-state tuition vouchers.] And we're limited to working 20 hours a week (oh, darn. really.) I said something about Jeff, and she said "Oh, so you're married?" perking up a bit. "Nope! I'm living in sin," I said, just to tweak her. She deflated just a touch, and then said, "How do you do it?" in just that voice, and I looked at her blankly. "What do you mean?" "Well, how do you do it, get along like that?" Well, I told her, our bills are low, the car's paid for, we only have to pay car insurance on one of us, our rent's cheap, we don't have kids, we don't lead an extravagant lifestyle. [side note: Really, I hadn't thought about it like that; per hour (well, broken down per hour; we don't get paid by the hour), this is actually the most money I've seen since I was working in tech.] And she just kind of looked at me blankly like I hadn't said anything; she's older, and apparently has a kid, and so I can see how she couldn't make it on what I'm being paid, but she couldn't seem to put herself in my shoes. The whole thing was decidedly odd.

I did Not Prime Time this year, which made me actually write something for the first time since Yuletide. It was fun! It was also a lot more low key…
