So, I'd tried signing up for my GREs a week and a half or so ago, and luckily, before I forked over my $115, I noticed that their website says that learner's permits are not acceptable identification. I emailed them and never heard back, so I finally called them this morning, and got the least helpful gentleman in the world on the phone. No, learner's permits are not acceptable. The only state they take learner's permits from is New York. They don't care that this has a photo and a signature, that it has the SAME NUMBER as my old learner's permit, and that the only difference between it and a license is the words learner's permit and the fact that it expires in 18 months instead of five years or whatever it is. No, there is no one I can yell at contact to protest their policy. No, there's nothing I can do. Oh, I can get a passport.

I call the DMV and double-check. I can hold a state ID or a learner's permit, but not both. At least the lady at the DMV had some righteous anger on my part that the fuckers at ETS won't take my official, state issued, government ID.

I called the local testing center, to see if they'd let me around it. They checked their list, and nope.

So, the way I see it, my options are:

1) register for the test, show up, hope that the person checking IDs hasn't read their list (not going to happen) and if they have, forfeit my $115 and go home. um, no.
2) get a passport. which, is on my list of things to do, but it's slow and i don't want to fork out the cash right now.
3) go get a state ID, and then get another learner's permit, possibly even waiting until we move to Greensboro, since I'm only going to drive maybe two or three times (I get to drive when I go to my parent's, usually) and I'd have to get one with the Greensboro address on it anyhow. Actually, this, while stupid, isn't a completely horrible option, and I'm only out $10 and an extra trip to the DMV, since I'd have to get a new ID for Greensboro. Hrms.
4) go out to podunk and try to take the road test. it's possible i could pass a road test in podunk - many moons ago, when i got my first driver's license, all i had to do for it was a three point turn, a left turn, back up once - but we'd have to arrange insurance (which is going to be expensive), i'm not sure i could pass even a bare bones road test at the moment, and i'd still have to get a new ID when we moved.

So I think option 3 is probably my best option, but man, this is stupid.

I did Not Prime Time this year, which made me actually write something for the first time since Yuletide. It was fun! It was also a lot more low key…
